Motown played an important role in popular music featuring African-American artists who achieved musical recording success. In the 1960’s Motown and its soul-based subsidiaries were the most successful proponents of what came to be known as “The Motown Sound”, a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence.
The Marvelettes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Jackson Five, The Temptations, The Spinners, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Martha and The Vandellas, Jr. Walker & the All Stars, and others were all signed to Motown labels and were apart of Hitsville USA. “The Sound of Young America”, Motown’s acts, were enjoying widespread popularity among black and white audiences alike.
